What the Role Involves

1. Design Preparation

You’ll handle the technical setup of files for printing, adjusting layouts to suit flexo machine specs.

Create print-ready files
Add bleed, crop marks, trapping
Modify customer designs as needed
Prepare artwork for different substrates
Ensure layout precision for production
File setup using industry formats (PDF, AI, EPS)
Template creation and adaptation
Substrate-based design adjustments

2. Color Management

Managing how color translates on press is critical. Your job includes ensuring accuracy and consistency.

Calibrate CMYK output
Handle spot and Pantone colors
Adjust contrast and sharpness
Prevent color shifting
Work with press team on ink setup
Pantone vs CMYK application
Color proofing and swatch testing
On-press color troubleshooting

3. Prepress Optimization

Before the job goes to print, files need to be optimized to avoid delays or quality issues.

Preflight all files
Flatten layers and convert fonts
Test-run print jobs
Reduce dot gain and smudges
Ensure correct resolution and format
Catching file errors early
Balancing speed and quality
Preventing common prepress flaws

4. Flexo Printing Knowledge

This isn’t basic digital printing. You must understand how flexo printing behaves under different conditions.

Know plate mounting and ink transfer
Adjust for cylinder repeat sizes
Account for material stretch or shrink
Know limits of the press and substrate
Modify files for clean, repeatable output
Flexo vs offset knowledge

5. Communication and Teamwork

You’ll work closely with press operators and supervisors. Clear, direct communication is expected.

6. Software Skills

Knowing the right tools is essential. Expect to use:

Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign

File sharing tools (Drive, WeTransfer)
Prepress workflow systems
Proper file organization
Use of smart layers and vector paths
Fast turnaround using design shortcuts
